William Willocks Joiner
William Willocks had a well-known joinery and undertaker business in Newport from the 1930s with the name continuing until 1981. His main workshop was at the top of Robert Street, but he had various other premises too. He had a workshop in Wormit and for many years from the 1940s until the 1960s he operated the very successful carpet-beating works there. After William’s death in 1960 the business was continued by his son-in-law William Grieve. In the late 1960s he had a DIY supplies shop at 28 Tay Street, the Handyman Shop, and from 1970 until the late 1970s the shop was in this building at the bottom of the High Street. This was built in the 1820s as the Tayfield Estate office. Many people still recall that Thomas Muir, Son & Patton Ltd, coal merchants, had their office here until 1970. After Willocks left, Modelia dress shop moved in. The building has now been converted to a house.
