Wormit Station Accident 1955
Grant Balfour
Stunning photograph of the horrific scene at Wormit station after the train carrying 500 children home to Dundee from picnics at Newport and Tayport crashed as it left the tunnel on the curve. Locals rushed to help, clambering in and over the carriages in their rush to help the children out. Easily recognisable are the white-clad players from the nearby tennis courts who were first on the scene. It’s to Grant Balfour, who was peacefully photographing the tennis match, that we owe this remarkable photograph.

I my Mother, Aunt and cousin were in this tragic accident. I am 72 and to this day I can remember pulling us out of the carriage which was on the embankment
