Newport School 1978
Two pictures of a rather sad-looking Newport School in 1978. The school had closed the previous year when the new school opened outside the village, and by the following year the old building was becoming rather dilapidated with many broken windows. This school had opened in 1878 so was in use for 99 years. The first picture shows the double gate on Kilnburn where the dinner van entered each day, running over a pupil’s foot one day! The upstairs room with the two large windows in this picture was a science lab when the school also served secondary pupils.
