Memories of Woodhaven Shop
My mom Jane Nicoll took over the shop from Mr Clark. I must have been 10 or 11 at the time and had the job of doing the paper rounds (2 on a Saturday evening). I used to hide from my friends under the counter when I was scrubbing the shop floor when everyone was off to the cinema in Newport on a Saturday night. Same thing Sunday morning doing the Sunday round, hiding from friends going off to church. It must have been 1946, or 1947.
We used to go sledging down the hill, out of the field gate and straight on to the road round by the farm. We might even sledge all the way down to the pier!
I rented a plot behind the shop and grew sweet peas etc. Old Mr Bell gave me “granny sookers”.
The Nicoll family had the shop from 1947 until 1958.
