Memories of St Fort Dairy
In the 1990s Mrs Allison (nee Swan) of Gauldry shared her memories of growing up at St Fort.
“I lived at St Fort from age 3 in 1928, latterly at Flass farm where my father was manager, and until my marriage in 1949. The Pilkingtons lived in the big house. (Miss Pilkington’s sister is Mrs Wilson of Hilton, Cupar.) There were only enough cows to supply milk, butter and cream to people on the estate and in the big house. My mother had attended a dairy school in Ayrshire and everything was ‘just so’ in the creamery. I remember the little butter pots that had a swan on them – that was just a coincidence! My mother retired to live in Mars Cottage.
“I used to walk to Forgan School through the St Fort grounds. I remember there was a patch of wild orchid near the doocot. The area of parkland in front of the house was called the greens.
“Miss Pilkington was Guide Captain in Newport. She used to take me to guide meetings.”
We believe the two young boys in the photograph to be Robert and Thomas Bathgate, sons of George Bathgate who was station master at St Fort station from 1900 until 1910.
