Wormit Football Team 1964
A photograph from 1964 showing Wormit’s successful amateur football team, who were at that time lying second in the Midlands League (Division II) and were hoping for promotion for the new season. Did they make it? Someone must know. Bob MacKenzie thinks this photo was taken when the team had just had new strips and it was a friendly match against Castle Huntly.

Thanks Bob. Have you seen the other reports here? I’ve put the link above.
Very interested in George Cunningham’s contribution, his memory is better than mine – we played in the same team.
I would be very interested to have a read of the match reports he still has and refers to.
Thanks for all this Albert. Great information.
Some familiar Tayport faces in the line-up… Jim Scott (back 1st from rt ), Eddie Stewart (2nd from rt), Ally Philp (front 2nd left), Maurice Flynn (front 4th from left). Eddie went on to become chairman of Tayport FC during the period his club appeared in 6 Scottish Junior Cup Finals.
This season, 2021/22, Maurice was on the committee of St Andrews United.
Wormit FC was a force to be reckoned with throughout the 1950s, winning the Midlands Championship in 1955/56 & 56/57 and winning the Bremner Cup and Gray Trophy twice. A first relegation in 1962/63 was, as Bob pointed out, followed by an immediate promotion back to the top division. However Wormit never recovered from relegation in 1969/70 and thereafter played in division 2 until the club’s final demise.
Thanks for all that info George. Great memories!
Whilst browsing through Newport and Wormit archives I came across photograph of Wormit amateur F.C. It brought back a lot of happy memories when I played for them. My name is George Cunningham. In the photograph I am extreme left front row. I have the original copy which was taken when we played a friendly at HMP Huntly Castle in 1963. I also have quite a few match reports from the newspaper Fife News 1963-1965. Also page from 2nd November 1963 about players of that year and history of Wormit Amateur FC. Regarding the team of 1963 we were top of the league by 1 point over Monifieth AFC. With one game against them at Wormit we were 5-1 down , brought it back to 5-4. Unfortunately ran out of time. ( When final whistle blew I was gutted to say the least. ) George M. Cunningham.
Great to hear they were successful. Thanks Bob.
I was lucky enough to play in that 1964 Wormit team. Wish I could turn back the clock. Really enjoyed my time there and of course we were promoted and had a successful season in the top division.
