Wormit Football Club Memories
Kenneth Hart recalls playing for Wormit Football Club in the 1950s.
“Wormit Football Club was a force to be reckoned with in these days. I played only twice for the first team but was happy in the second team for a couple of years. I played in goal and my first game was at Wormit where we beat Timex 11-1. Due to the fact that all the boys from the school played at the goals nearest the school there was always a muddy hollow between the goalposts at that end and this would fill with water. My first game for the second team was in winter and I stood on a sheet of solid ice.
First Team
“The first team played in East Fife’s colours of vertical yellow and black. Bob Watt was their left back and captain and apart from him there were some really good players in the team. Jack Cunningham , was an elegant half back and I’m fairly sure there was an inside forward called Rogers who was capped for Scotland at amateur level. Donald Ross was the first team goalkeeper and he was good.
Second Team
“The second team played in red like Aberdeen. I always wore green in goal which was a nod to my Edinburgh background and my liking for Hibernian. My favourite game was always at a Fleet Air Arm establishment near Arbroath where they fed us after the game. The chips were really good. I was called into the first team for a friendly match against Tayport which was held on a Friday evening and I dived at the feet of the Tayport centre forward receiving a kick in the knee for my pains. I could barely stand but there were no substitutes in these days and Bob Watt told me to go on the left wing with somebody else taking over in goal. I stood there for a few minutes and then got on my motorbike which I rode home changing gear with my right hand. I was incapacitated for several weeks after that and after a long recuperation I was again picked for the first team. We played at Gray’s United, a team of builders in Dundee but sadly my nerve had gone and I gave up the game after that. Although I never met him the parents of a famous footballer, Ian Harnett, certainly lived in Wormit. He had played for Lochee Harp and was a regular with Queens Park for several years gaining several caps for Scotland at amateur level.”
