Tay Ferries Last Sailings Board
This board was on the wall outside the pier, stating ferry times each day. The photograph shows the times for Thursday 18 August 1966, the day the ferry service ended and the road bridge opened. There was one crossing at 7 am then a full service in the afternoon. The final sailing took place in the evening at 6.30 pm.
Why were there no sailings that morning? During construction of the bridge the ferry timetable had been disrupted as the ferries could not pass far enough down-river to avoid the sandbanks at low tide. This may have been the reason for the cancellations on the morning of the opening, or it may have been to limit traffic movement in Dundee for the Queen Mother’s arrival and for the bridge opening ceremony.
