Swinton, 2nd Lt. James Gibson, 4th (Territorial) Battalion, The Black Watch
James was the second son of Andrew Swinton, Headteacher at Ann Street School, Dundee, and the family home was at Laura Place, 7 Woodmuir Terrace, Newport. James had served as an apprentice to Messrs Thomas and Wilkie, architects in Dundee, and thereafter worked as an architect in London with his uncle. He served with the Hampshire Regiment at Gallipoli and then in Egypt and then was commissioned in the Black Watch.
He was killed in the Somme area in Northern France on 25th March 1918, aged 26. This was during the Spring offensive, the final unsuccessful attempt by the Germans to defeat the Allied troops on the Western Front. His body was never found so James is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial to the Missing, along with 15,000 others lost at the same time in the same area of northern France.
James is also remembered on the memorial window in Newport-on-Tay Church.
