Storrier, Gunner Herbert, 155 Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery
Herbert was the fourth of twelve children of the long-established Newport family of roofers and slaters. His father John started the roofing business and there have now been six generations of Storrier roofers in the village. The family home was at Fountainbrae, 24 Tay Street, Newport.
He was killed on 8th February 1917, aged 26, and is buried at the Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France. This is in the area of the River Somme and although the main Battle of the Somme had taken place the previous year, fighting in the area continued on into the next year.
His name is on the St Fillan’s Church memorial plaque, now positioned in Newport-on-Tay Church.
Poppy made by Charlie, Newport School.
