He had attended Newport School, then served a three year apprenticeship with Sturrock and Murray, engineers in Dundee, before becoming a draughtsman at Telephone House, Dundee. He had been a Scout and Rover Scout and was keen on motorcycles. His father was an accountant and the family home was at Taymount, 1 (now 4) Prospect Terrace, East Newport.
He was based at RAF Thorney Island in the south of England, flying anti-submarine patrols, and was killed at the age of 25 on 27th March 1942. He is buried in France at the Roscanvel Communal Cemetery in Brittany, and he is remembered on the Newport-on-Tay Church memorial plaque.
