Aitken, Private John, 2nd Royal Scots
John had attended Dundee High School and the family home was Roseneath, 16 Hillpark Road, Wormit. He had played football for Newport and was a member of Wormit tennis club. Before the war he had been a member of the Newport Volunteers. John’s brother Robert had drowned in the Tay in 1911. Before joining the army John had worked for Polack and Company in Dundee.
John was reported missing on 30th July 1916 in the Battle of the Somme, aged 27. He was later reported killed, and was buried at Delville Wood Cemetery, France. He is remembered on the Wormit Free Church (Riverside Road) memorial plaque. John’s older brother James also served in France, but with the Black Watch.
