Postcard: an Early View of Newport-on-Tay from the West, showing Kinbrae House Grounds
Two of the same postcard, but both are worth having. In this view over Newport from the west, Kinbrae House grounds can be seen, possibly shortly after the grounds were landscaped, as there are no mature trees or shrubs. In the left hand bottom corner can be seen the lodge house for Kinbrae and the large double gate for access to the drive. The curving driveway actually follows exactly the same route as the present day road up into Kinbrae Park. The first view allows us to see slightly more of the lay-out of the grounds with the house just out of sight and the start of the terrace balustrade just visible. This large square lawn was where garden fetes were held. Kinbrae Court stands today almost exactly where the house was.
The second card however is much clearer and more can be seen of the village. In the middle is the roof of the lodge house of Westwood (now St Serf’s care home). The lodge is still there today. The High Street can be made out quite easily, but interestingly the large block with shop and flats above next to the steps has not yet been built. This dates the photograph to 1891 at latest.
