Moncur, 2nd Radio Officer John (Jack) Clacher, Merchant Navy
One of a family of three sons, who all played in their father’s dance band in venues like the Masons’ Hall in Wormit (above Spar shop). Jack played the fiddle. The family home was at Kintyrie, 39 Kilmany Road, Wormit.
Jack was a member of the well-known Moncur family of painters and decorators who were in business here from the 1920s until at least the late 1970s. They operated first from their base in Wormit in the small building above Wormit station, now hidden under layers of ivy, and latterly from their base at Newport pier, next to the post office. Jack, however, did not join the family firm, but instead worked as a clerk on the railway.
He was killed when the oil tanker he was on was blown up in the Thames, on 21st September 1941, at the age of 24. His body was not found and he is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial to the Missing in London. Jack is also remembered on the Wormit Church memorial plaque.
Poppy made by P7, Wormit School.
