McFarland, Pilot Donald Keith, 77 Sqdn., RAFVR
One of five brothers, Walter was educated at Morgan Academy and was a trainee chartered accountant with Moody Stewart and Robertson in Dundee. His father was minister at Balmerino Church and the family home was at Hillpark, 7 Viewmount Road, Wormit. He was treasurer of the Scottish Beekeepers’ Association. He was in the volunteer reserve and was called up quickly after the outbreak of war.
He had died on 13th June 1941 aged 26, his body having been found in Holland, and is buried at Bergen Op Zoop Cemetery in the Netherlands. He was possibly on a mission targeting the industrial area of the Ruhr valley, in northern Germany. The later dambuster raids would attack the dams of the River Ruhr.
Donald is remembered on the Wormit Church memorial plaque.
