The brother of Frederick MacKenzie, he was the younger son of Frederick Thomas Mackenzie and Annie Sang Mackenzie, of Riverview, 35 Naughton Road, Wormit. John had graduated from St Andrews University.
He was killed in action on 27th May 1918, aged 27, just two months after the death of his brother, and his name is recorded on the Soissons Memorial to the Missing in France.
