Lawson, Corporal Robert T., 256 (Highland) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery
The youngest of a family of four, his family home was Helen Villa, 49 Bay Road, Wormit. He had worked as a teller at the British Linen Bank in West Port, Dundee, and was one of the first Wormit men to enlist at the outbreak of war. He was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s despatch for distinguished conduct in the field six weeks prior to his death. ‘Mentioned in dispatches’ signifies particular bravery and is just short of a medal.
He died 25th July 1916, at the Battle of the Somme, aged 26, and is buried at Meaulte Military Cemetery, France. His body wasn’t found until 1st August. Robert is remembered on the Wormit Free Church (Riverside Road) memorial plaque.
There was also a casualty in this house in World War II. Robert Lawson Paterson died in 1940. Our two Roberts are related, but we are not sure exactly how…. perhaps uncle/nephew.
