Key, Private William Wilson, 14th The London Regiment (London Scottish)
An ex-pupil of Dundee High School, William lived at Bonawe, 35 Riverside Road, Wormit.
He was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, France, 1st July 1916, aged just 21. On this day, the British Army suffered 60,000 casualties, 20,000 of whom were killed. By November only six miles of ground had been gained and combined British and German casualties exceeded one million men.
William was lost in battle and his body never found so he is remembered on the enormous Thiepval Memorial to the Missing in northern France. Thiepval is the largest Commonwealth memorial, and its colossal size and its position high on a ridge mean it can be seen from miles around. On the memorial are the names of 72,000 Allied soldiers who were lost without trace during the Battle of the Somme.
He is remembered on the memorial plaques in Dundee High School and the Forgan Church memorial plaque, now positioned in Newport-on-Tay Church. He is also on the Wormit Free Church (Riverside Road) plaque.
