John Dott Scoutmaster
John Dott was involved with Newport and Wormit Scouts and Cubs from his childhood days in the Cubs in the 1930s until his official retirement from the movement in 1995. From the late 1950s until 1973 he was Scoutmaster. In 1973 he was appointed District Commissioner, a post he held for 22 years. Even after ‘retirement’ he continued as District Treasurer for several years. In view of his exceptional service he was given an Honorary Scouter role, which meant that he was still able to wear uniform when attending Scouting events.
To acknowledge his remarkable service to the Scout movement, in 1995 local Scouters organised a This Is your Life celebration of his Scouting career. Our first two photographs show this event, held on Friday 28th April 1995 in the Scout Hut at Waterstone Crook. Guests represented all six decades of John’s service, with perhaps the star guest being Mrs Lang, John’s Cub mistress from the 1930s and 40s. The news clipping reports on the evening.
John and wife Hazel met through Scouting: when John was Scoutmaster, Hazel was Cub leader in Newport. There was of course a Scout and Cub guard-of-honour at their wedding in 1964 – see our third photograph.
