Dog Days Newport 1970s
We were sent the following doggy memories from the 1970s.
“Does anyone remember the dogs there were in the 1970s in Newport? There was Trixie who used to come to Windmill Park when we had hockey practice from Newport Primary. The huge black Labrador belonging to the doctor who would lie in wait on top of the wall at doctor’s corner and bark when someone was right below him. And Mrs. Troup’s stoic little westie who would flop down on the pavement when she stopped once again to catch up with all the gossip.”
Since then we have had a flurry of doggy memories. Who knew there were so many interesting canines in Newport in the 1970s?
“Trixie belonged to the O’Hare family. You would often see her walking along the road with someone’s bath mat or something like that in her mouth.”
“I remember Trixie very well, cars had to drive round her if she was asleep!”
“Trixie stole a bag of flour from Findlay’s shop (on Union Street) and went home more white than black. She once followed someone to Tayport, into a shop there, burst open a box of Mars Bars and ate a couple. She also followed people on to the Dundee bus, ending up in Thurso Crescent, Whitfield.”
“Trixie came home one day with a size 3 shoe. My mum said why don’t you go and get the other one?!”
“I remember Angus the Scottie from the Seymour Hotel on Tay Street.”
“The Seymour had a dog that would often get on the bus to Dundee.”
“There was a wee black dog that the old lady owner always wrapped toilet paper round so he could be seen in the dark. I can’t remember it’s proper name, we always called it Gnasher!”
“What about the crazy mutt in the field on the farm at the bridge that used to spin round in circles when you peeped your car horn?”
“A lady in Youngsdale Place had a dachshund with wheels! The wheels helped his mobility when his back legs failed him.”
