Barlow, Sergeant Harold, 2nd Scots Guards

Harold was a member of the Barlow family, plumbers in Newport (Betsworth and Barlow), and the family home was at 9 Robert Street, Newport.
He died of dysentery while a prisoner of war in the Western Desert in Egypt, on 7th August 1942. He was 24. He was buried in Heliopolis War Cemetery in Egypt. His name is on the Newport-on-Tay Church memorial plaque.
Five of our casualties died in the North African campaign. Fighting was intense through Libya and Egypt as the British were desperately trying to protect access to the Suez Canal and the route to the Middle East oil fields.
