Air Raid Shelter at Old Pier
Memories of the WWII air raid shelter from Findlay McLaren.
The air raid shelter was on the sea wall where the new houses are. It was set about 5 feet back from the edge. Standing at the door on the east end nearest the water corner that we used to store our canoes. Directly opposite was Don’s old Blacksmith shop and forge. Maybe about 20 feet away. In front of the doors to the forge was a metal ring for putting iron tyres in cart wheels. To the right, approximately in line with the foot of the stairs to High Street was the entrance to the tunnel. It went in about 10feet and turned right and extended under the monumental sculptors yard. Behind the shelter was the lane that ran up to the Hotel and joined Granary Lane where the current entrance from High St is today. On the south west corner of the shelter there was an L shaped cutaway that eased access to the roof of the shelter. On the roof you could fleet your chucky out line for fishing. To the west of the shelter there was a wall atop the sea wall. It started about 10 feet from the end of the shelter.
