Brand, Captain David Halyburton, 1st Batt., The Scots Guards
Son of Annie and the late David Brand of Bay House, 12 Tay Street, Newport. Previously he had fought in the Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902), and more recently he had been employed in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). David was the sixth in a family of ten children. There was only one other son.
He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry and meritorious service. David was killed on 29th March, 1918, aged 42. He is buried at Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, France.
In our second photograph David is on the left. The photograph was received from historian Richard Emden who had stumbled across it in an old photograph album bought in a London sale. He matched the name on the back to our website and contacted us!

Captain David Halyburton Brand was my great great Uncle. My Father (81) to whom he was a great uncle will be delighted to see this phot and information as to where he is buried. We knew he was an officer in the Scots Guards and that he won an MC in 1917 ( I also have details as to how and where this was). My daughter is visiting the war graves with her school this coming weekend and with this information hopefully she can visit his grave. He wasn’t forgotten, his sister Ada Brand named one of her sons after him David Halyburton – my great uncle Hal ! with more time I will be able to find other photos if of interest. Thank you so much for having this information available online. Helen
Thank you so much Richard. I am emailing you separately.
I recently purchased a ww1 album containing images of the Scots Guards in the trenches in 1916. One image is of David Halyburton Brand. I am happy to share if you re interested. I notice that someone called Ava made the poppy for David and therefore she might be interested to see a picture of the man. Kind regards, Richard
