Forgandakey, St Andrews Road

Forgan Church

Newport was in the parish of Forgan, and this building was the Forgan Parish Church. Built in 1842, it replaced the previous parish church, now in ruins, on the minor road between Forgan and Kirktonbarns. The original building here is to the design of David Bryce who would go on to design Fettes College in Edinburgh. The church could seat 600. Early in its life it was extensively damaged by fire, but it was swiftly repaired and continued to be used for almost 150 years until dwindling membership forced its closure in 1981.

Forgandakey Today

The old pulpit within the conversion

The church has now been converted to a house and named Forgandakey. The fine stained glass windows and other church features such as the pulpit and galleries have been retained. During the conversion the interior was restored to the original David Bryce colour scheme. Extensive evidence of the 1840s fire was also uncovered with scorching having been simply painted over. The building is now equipped with significant green energy technology.
