Seamills Cottage, 6 High Road
Seamills Cottage is one of the oldest in the village. It shows on maps from the 1820s and it is clearly visible in the well-known 1830s print of the Union at Newport pier. The cottage has always belonged to Tayfield Estate. Originally there were two cottages, and previously they were known as Tayfield Cottages. The cottages housed workers on the estate, some of them for very many years. For example William McLaren, a forester on the estate, lived in one of the cottages from 1886 until 1940.
In the 1950s the two cottages were combined in one, and it was then occupied by Robert Berry, an uncle of the previous Dr John Berry of Tayfield.
The cottage in 2022 has undergone complete refurbishment and repair.
