Meldrum Square, 35-45 Robert Street

Meldrum Square is the name given to the group of cottages at the top end of Robert Street. The cottages show on the 1855 OS map but it is not known how much older they are than that. They may well date from the 1830s. They are named after Mrs Meldrum of Dron, near Longforgan. She and other members of the Meldrum family owned the land and all the cottages in the square until around 1900.

There were originally nine cottages, including the two that front onto King Street. The immediately adjacent tenement blocks on King Street and Queen Street were also part of the square. The two cottages at the top end of the Robert Street square were combined into one, now 45 Robert Street. The cottages mostly comprised two rooms. In some cases they would be very overcrowded. For example in 1871 there was a family of nine living in two rooms in 37 Robert Street.
