Walk 2: St Fort Estate Circular Walk

A circular walk round St Fort from Wormit
Andy Gillies

This circular walk around part of the St Fort Estate partly follows the old stage coach route over Flass Hill from the pier and ferry at Woodhaven. Once up on the hill, the route follows farm tracks, but the access paths from Flass Road (take path at corner just above Wormit School, and pass the end of Ericht Road) and Flass Cottage are narrow, steep and often muddy. There is a kissing gate on the path from Ericht Road, and a cattle grid and a large gate at Flass Cottage. The distance from the nature trail steps near Wormit School is approximately 2.3 km /1.4mls. This route would not be accessible from Wormit for wheelchair users or those with reduced mobility. It is advised that dogs are kept on leads. The hilltop circuit can also be reached from Kilmany Road, Mount Stewart Road and Reservoir Road, but again the access tracks are steep and narrow, and often muddy.
There are spectacular panoramic views from the hill, and deer and buzzards are frequently seen, and there are wild cherry and hazel trees along the edge of the wood. A peregrine falcon has also been spotted.
