Woodend, 19-33 West Road

This row of houses, four up and four down, was called Woodend. Interestingly they were not all built at the same time. The two furthest west were built first in the 1820s by Thomas Just. The next two were built in the 1830s by Robert Just and the final eastmost four, also by Robert Just, probably around 1850.

The first house, number 19 today, was a grocer’s shop for over 100 years from the 1850s until the 1970s, one of several convenience stores dotted around the village. On the wall is one of Newport’s three Victorian post boxes. The picture below is from around 1910.
