Castle Cottage, 52 West Road

Castle Cottage was built in 1812 by William Just. The house has a round room facing the river and it’s understood that there was specially built curved furniture that fitted the room and that was sold with the house. Mr Just had his own private water supply from the well on the other side of the road. Mr Just’s widow was still living here in the 1850s.

Castle Cottage from the river

At the time of the 1855 OS map, the property was known as Priory. In 1864 the cottage was sold at a roup (auction) for £332. Very briefly in 1891 the owners called it Horngolloch, a Scottish word for earwig!

From 1890 onwards the cottage was occupied by Jonas Kidd, a man of many talents. In the 1870s he had served briefly as post-master, operating from the building on Boat Brae that is now a house. He also ran a grocery store there as well as a file-cutting business.

In the latter years of the 20th century the cottage became very dilapidated, so it’s good to see such a historical building now restored.
