Darvel Lodge, 63 Cupar Road/2 Victoria Street

Darvel Lodge was built in the late 1880s by James Morton who came from Darvel in Ayrshire. By the 1880s Darvel had become the centre of the Scottish lace industry, and it was actually a member of the Morton family who was responsible for its introduction and development there. Darvel lace was known and in much demand throughout the world.

The Morton Family

James Morton came to Newport in the early 1870s and first lived in Maryfield Cottage (now Strathview, 8 Queen Street), eventually having Darvel Lodge built in 1888. He had very quickly established a very successful tailoring and clothier business in Dundee.

The Morton family lived at Darvel Lodge until the 1990s, a remarkable stretch of time for one family. James was followed by his son James B, then his grandson Ronald. In 1936 the house was split into two flats, and Ronald and his wife Rosamunde then lived in the upper part.
