The house here at 21 Bay Road was a shop until around 1960. Most of the time it seems to have been a confectioners with the owners also offering the premises as refreshment rooms. Around 1912 the section at the side was rented out and fishmonger Maggie Gall had her surprisingly modern sounding Fish Bar located there. In the lovely old photograph here the Fish Bar can be seen in what is now the garage, and the shop window advertises Cadbury’s Chocolate.
The young ladies, clutching their golf clubs, are clearly heading off for a round of golf at Wormit Bay Golf Course. This 9-hole course was situated at the end of Bay Road to the rear of Wormit Bay and was in operation from 1912 until 1940 when it was ploughed up as part of the World War II Dig for Victory campaign. No doubt the shop provided welcome refreshment for both the golfers and also tennis players at the nearby courts.
