The Tanks, Reservoir Road

In 1879, in response to government legislation encouraging the provision of pure water supplies, a reservoir was built up on Wormit Hill. This reservoir received water piped across the new (first) Tay Rail Bridge from the Dundee supply at Lintrathen. From the Wormit reservoir a new efficient water supply was distributed throughout the rapidly growing villages on this side of the river, replacing the many, and frequently impure, private wells. The arrival of the railway and the fine new water supply were the catalysts that enabled Wormit’s rapid residential development.

Under construction

Fast forward to 2000 and the reservoir, by then surplus to requirements for many years, was offered by the Water Board for sale at auction. It would require considerable imagination and a great leap of faith to see that this thoroughly functional building of brick and slate could ever be transformed into a magnificent home. But that is precisely what local architects James Pask and wife Susan achieved.

The Pasks saw a great opportunity to convert the disused industrial building into a family home with a beautiful garden and far-reaching views across the Tay estuary.

The kitchen

Use of steel, timber and glass structures in keeping with its industrial past enabled the conversion of the water tank into an open plan family home. The very high levels of insulation used during the conversion have made it a very comfortable and efficient place to live.
