Before World War II this ground had been a putting green, but during the war it was dug up and used for allotments as part of the Government's Dig For Victory campaign. The allotments were maintained after the war until the town council built houses there for the elderly. Granny Nicol Granny Nicol appears to have been a well-known and much loved Newport character. Widowed in World War I, she was left to bring up five children on her own. Netherlea House Stained Glass Two stained glass panes from the staircase window in Netherlea House, demolished in 2019. On the slope is Northfield farm, and in the distance the chimney of the gasworks. The gasworks moved to this location in 1903 from their position below the High Street. Newburgh Road originally was the name for the whole length of the main road through West Newport to the end of Wormit. The streets were re-named to the present day versions in 1962. Kirk Road in Snow A lovely old photograph of Kirk Road in the snow, before the trees were cut down and the road widened to allow safer traffic to the new Newport Primary School (1977).
