They held rather grand events in the Blyth Hall at which evening dress was encouraged! Their ambitious shows and concerts earned them glowing reports in the press. Newport Pipe Band c. 1930 In the 1920s and 1930s Newport and district had a very successful pipe band, always in attendance at any public events. Music Lessons in Newport Samuel (Sam) Guttridge was music teacher and organist at St Thomas' Church for some 30 years from the 1920s until the 1950s. He lived in Kilnburn. Here we have a leaflet giving details of his arrangements for music lessons both in Dundee and Newport. Newport Musical Society 1926 Programme for Newport Musical Society's production of The Legend of St Yvonne on 10th and 11th December 1926 in the Blyth Hall. The programme was signed by several of the members. Sam Guttridge was organist for the production, and head of a well known musical family in Newport. There are also signatures from three members ... Newport Amateur Operatic Society 1927 Programme for the Newport Operatic Society's performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience in 1927. The show ran for four nights in the Blyth Hall in March.
