Pierhead 1950s A fairly quiet day at the pierhead in 1950s. Police and Motor Bike at Pier 1930s The local sergeant keeping an eye on the Ariel motor bike and side-car driver. In the background the old public telephone box. Although the familiar red telephone box was designed in 1924, it was only in the late 1930s that it became widespread, and it clearly hadn't reached Newport at the time of this photograph. Policeman at Pier 1930s The first shop in the parade of shops in the pier buildings was a police office, so there was always a police presence at the pier. The car seems to be heading off, and on the other side of the road a car parked outside the post office and an approaching bus are just visible ... Provost Scrymgeour at Pier Photograph showing Provost Scrymgeour (Provost 1934 - 1937) immediately opposite the ferry pier. The crowd is clearly waiting for someone or something, but will we ever know what it was. Could be someone important arriving or departing by the ferry, or perhaps someone driving through. Arrival of the Ferry, Boat Road 1900s Wonderful photograph showing the arrival of crowds of passengers and carriages coming off the ferry, all apparently dressed in their 'Sunday best'. Ferry traffic and passengers 1950s A busy morning as passengers and traffic queue for the ferry. The pier clock says 8.30 so presumably these crowds are commuters heading for work in Dundee.
