Tinkers' Wood
This is the small wood at the junction of Inverdovat and Cupar roads. It used to be used as a “tinker” encampment. The tinkers would do seasonal work and go round the doors hawking. It was said they would leave a mark to warn off their comrades from unfruitful doors and a mark for the more generous. It was not uncommon to come home to find a stray tinker woman eating at our kitchen table. Our house was well marked. Some of them were proper tinkers in that they were metal workers. I remember one with a bicycle that stood on a stand. He would sharpen knives on a wheel driven off the bike pedals and carry out repairs to pots and pans using a hammer and I suppose a small anvil or work bench.
