Memories of the Rio Cinema
Memories of the Rio Cinema from Findlay McLaren.
We used to go every Friday night after Cubs and a 3d poke of chips from Stinkie’s. I always had a free pass from Fag Louttit’s because I did a paper round there.
Great fun beating the seats in the ninepennies when the cavalry appeared over the hill. The dust we raised added to the atmosphere.
Handfuls of programmes were converted into paper aeroplanes to be launched from the train as it passed over the ravine on the approach to West Newport station as we headed to Dundee baths on Saturday morning.
Went to the last night at the Rio Cinema. The film was Hatari (I think), a John Wayne movie about catching wild animals in Africa. Had to pay Saturday prices.

Just old enough to have a clear memory of VE Day 1945 and seeing neon lights at Rio Cinema. Like all neon lights these had been off for the duration of the second World War.
