Ian Fleming: the Newport Connection
Valentine Fleming, father of Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, was born in Tighavon in West Newport. It’s the house accessed at the far end of Woodmuir Terrace numbered 15 Woodmuir Crescent. He was born there in 1882. He was the first child but the family moved south quite soon after that. Valentine would later become MP for Henley, but was then killed in World War I, leaving his widow and sons Peter, Ian, Richard and Michael.

Yes – Valentine’s brother Philip Fleming (Ian’s uncle) was born in Newport in 1889, not long before the family moved south. Philip won a gold medal for rowing in the Stockholm Olympics in 1912.
Not sure if accurate but Google says that his brother, Philip, was also born in Newport and he won a gold medal at the 1912 Olympics. If true, can’t be many born in Newport that have won Olympic gold?
