When the diesels were introduced to the line it was a revelation: such openness you could see the track ahead of you over the driver’s shoulder. Likewise at the rear you could watch the trackside disappearing after you. They were comfortable and offered fine views. I remember I set my alarm and getting up early to see the diesels (via the bathroom window I could see the train emerge on the other side of the tunnel) and motor past our house. It was quite exciting. By the angle of the line in the picture it looks like the train is entering the tunnel.
